Vodka Sunrise

I’ve broken this into two layers to create the effect of a float of grenadine, so allow for a little extra prep time. This recipe will fill two orange halves.

1.5 ounce grenadine syrup
2 ounces orange juice
1 package Knox gelatin
2 ounces water
1 tablespoon sugar
3 ounces vodka

Put the grenadine syrup and 2 ounces of orange juice in your small sauce pan. Sprinkle half a packet of gelatin over top and let it bloom for about a minute. Heat over low heat for about six minutes, stirring often, until the gelatin has dissolved. Divide between two orange halves and chill thoroughly before adding the second layer.

When the first layer is set combine the water and sugar in the saucepan. Sprinkle the remaining half packet of gelatin over the top and allow it to bloom for a minute or so. Heat over low heat for six minutes, stirring, until the gelatin has dissolved. Take off the heat and add the vodka. Pour over the grenadine layer filling each orange half all the way up to the top and chill until firm, overnight if possible.
